Singer Ashanti was an extra child in the film based on civil rights leader Malcolm X. Her grandfather, James Davis, was also a civil rights leader and head of the Long Island chapter of the NAACP.

In 2016, after the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Chicago Cubs and were pulled from World Series contention, Long Beach rapper Snoop Dogg released a video featuring the Banda MS song, “Tengo Que Colgar”. The song centers on grief, something Snoop and other Dodgers fans no doubt felt that day.
Banda MS said in interviews that they initially thought it was fake, but confirmed that the video of Snoop Dogg listening to their music was real.
