Concept of medical office building, hotel in downtown Pasadena parking lot – Pasadena Now
An AC Hotel, the business-oriented brand that is part of the Marriott Hotels group, will likely roll out of a parking lot on Colorado Boulevard and Madison Avenue in Pasadena soon, instead of a five-story medical office building that the Pasadena Design Commission had previously approved.
Plans submitted to the Ministry of Planning and Community Development show that the site owner is requesting the change.
According to a note on the City Design Commission agenda, the city council on July 10, 2018 called the Design Commission approval of the Consolidated Design Review for consideration and, at the Plaintiff’s request, the hearing continued on several occasions as the property negotiated for a new proposal for potential development on the site.
Last year, the board referred the review appeal back to the Design Commission and it was put on hold pending the applicant to go ahead.
On September 14, the developer submitted a change request for an approved project to transform the previously approved medical practice building into a six-story hotel with commercial space on the ground floor, in a design significantly different from the one previously approved.
The project requires a conditional use permit (CUP). CUP’s application is currently being reviewed by staff and is expected to go to a public hearing in the near future.
“If this request is approved, the next step in the review process will be the Design Commission’s review of the request submitted for changes to an approved project,” according to the memo.
The plans showed that what should be built instead is a new AC Hotel Pasadena, with 195 rooms and 5,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor.
Due to the time that has elapsed since the most recent review by the Project Design Board, staff had to present an overview of the project history and previously presented designs to update the current Design Board. on the scope of the project and the previously presented drawings.
Staff and the applicant will also provide the commission with an outline of the design that has been submitted for the new hotel project.
Staff will provide a full staff report and recommendations regarding the project’s consistency with applicable design guidelines in the specific central district plan will be included when the project is scheduled for formal review by the commission.
