Melco Resorts says its âGet the Jabâ campaign in Macau has been a great success.
The Macau casino operator, which also has integrated resorts in the Philippines and is developing another in Cyprus, says nearly 2,400 people were fully vaccinated during its June 18-20 vaccination campaign. Melco’s Studio City Event Center on the Cotai Strip was the site of the clinic.
With colleague immunity now established as a key company goal to ensure a safe environment for colleagues, guests and the community, we are delighted to see the positive response from our colleagues to the ‘Get the Jab’ campaign. said Akiko Takahashi, executive vice president. and chief of staff to billionaire Melco CEO Lawrence Ho.
“We will continue to organize more health seminars to promote the benefits of immunization and answer questions from our colleagues so that informed choices best suited to the needs of each individual can be made, while supporting the government’s efforts to achieve collective immunity, âTakahashi added.
Melco Rewards Participants
Last month, Melco Resorts announced that it is setting aside 16 million MOP (US $ 2 million) for its “Get a Jab” initiative. Each of the employees at the company’s Macau casino who was fully vaccinated was compensated 1,000 MOP ($ 125). Each vaccinated employee was also entered for a chance to win one of six MOP1 million prizes ($ 125,000).
The free âGet a Jabâ clinic was open to all Melco team members and their families, but also to the Macau community.
Although vaccines are widely available in China, people in Macau have not been eager to queue for their vaccine. According to the most recent data, only 13.9% of all Macau residents have become fully immunized, far from herd immunity.
âHerd immunity occurs when a large part of a community (the herd) becomes immune to a disease, making it unlikely that the disease will spread from person to person. As a result, the whole community is protected, not just those who are immune, âsays the Mayo Clinic.
What percentage of the community must be immunized to obtain collective immunity? The Mayo Clinic explains that this varies from disease to disease. For example, it is estimated that measles – a highly contagious disease – requires 94 percent of the vaccinated population to successfully interrupt the transmission of the disease.
For COVID-19, health officials estimate that at least 70% of the population must be vaccinated to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Casinos pay for vaccines
Melco Resorts is one of a long list of casinos around the world that have offered workers incentives to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
In Mississippi, workers at the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort received $ 300 for getting the vaccine. In Las Vegas, The Cosmopolitan offered each worker $ 50 to get vaccinated. The bonus increased as the Strip property workforce continued to get vaccinated. If 90 percent of staff get vaccinated, the tip will drop to $ 350 – 100 percent, $ 500.
Back in Macau, Wynn Resorts offered its vaccinated employees two additional days of paid vacation in 2021.
