Virginia Soul Singer Fatally Shot; Son Charged With Murder – NBC4 Washington
A Virginia woman known for her powerful voice was found fatally shot outside her home on Friday morning in Spotsylvania County, Va., And her own son is charged with her murder.
Latoya Acree was found in the driveway of her home on Pondoley Drive, the county sheriff’s office said. She was 41 and sang in the band True Soul, which performs in the DC area and beyond.
“She was really, really happy,” her bandmate Caesar Roy said on Monday. “It looked like things were turning out just for her, and it happened.”
True Soul had prepared this Saturday for an awareness program on domestic violence. Now they will dedicate their performance to his memory.
Acree’s son, Elijah D. Smith, 21, was arrested and charged with second degree murder.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 6100 block of Pondoley Drive in the Oak Grove subdivision at around 12:30 a.m. Friday after a report of a shooting.
They found Acree in the driveway with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Doctors tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead.
Smith was identified as a suspect and found at a nearby Four Mile Fork hotel.
A preliminary investigation found “there had been a family dispute prior to the mother-son shooting,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. No additional information was immediately released.
Roy said he had just seen Acree a few hours ago and couldn’t believe the news.
âObviously God had a better plan, a bigger plan, for her to sing,â he said.
Smith was held without bail at Rappahannock Regional Prison. He had recently been released from prison on bail, awaiting trial for assault and battery. This accusation was not of a domestic nature, the sheriff’s office said.
