What a Difference a Year Makes: Cruisin ‘the Coast Set to Celebrate 25th Anniversary with Record Attendance (Program)

0

JACKSON COUNTY, Mississippi – A year ago, Cruisin ‘the Coast officials faced a threatening storm in the Gulf of Mexico and a still raging pandemic in Mississippi. A year later, they are ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the event with record attendance and attendance.

“We’re definitely in a much better position than we were around this time last year,” acknowledged longtime Cruisin ‘Executive Director Woody Bailey. “Right now everything is looking good for a great event.

“We’re on a record pace and with the weather cooperating as it apparently is, we should be on track to do really well and everyone who comes should have a good time.”

By the end of pre-registration in September, 8,043 Cruisers had registered for the event. On-site registration will begin Monday at Cruise Central in Gulfport’s Centennial Plaza and continue throughout the week, with the final number of registered cruisers unknown until noon next Saturday.

The registration record is 8,620, set in 2019. Pre-registrations for this year were 700 ahead of the record pace of 2019.

Despite the challenges presented in 2020, which included not only COVID-19 but the threat posed by Hurricane Delta, Cruisin ‘managed to be voted the best auto show in the United States in a survey of USA Today readers. , marking the third time in four years Cruisin ‘has claimed the top spot.

As usual, all four Jackson County towns will host Cruisin ‘events, with Ocean Springs and Pascagoula once again serving as official Cruisin’ sites for three days. Cruisers must visit all official websites and receive a stamp to be eligible for the prizes awarded at the end of the week.

Like Bailey, those responsible for Ocean Springs and Pascagoula Cruisin ‘are delighted that the event appears to be back in full force.

“Things are much better,” said Nicky Maxwell, who heads Pascagoula’s Cruisin ‘committee. “We should have really wonderful weather. There is a cold front that is setting in that should push everything away from us. The number of COVIDs is steadily declining. We have settled into a great place and it will be a great three day event. “

Chic Cody, Ocean Springs ‘longtime Cruisin’ coordinator, agreed.

“We’re absolutely ready and excited to have Cruisin ‘back to normal. There are already more than 8,000 registered cruisers – and more to come – from 44 states. We have a big night planned for our Friday Night Sock Hop. We are set. We’re all excited about it.

Cody noted that the Ocean Springs High School football team, which typically has a conflicting game with the Friday Night Sock Hop, will host Biloxi on Thursday night instead, allowing football fans to attend the big event. Friday evening.

Maxwell said business owners were also excited to see the full list of cruisers return to the coast. The event has an estimated economic impact of nearly $ 30 million on the Mississippi coast – although that number has obviously dropped significantly in 2020.

“Everyone is excited at Pascagoula, impatient to see the cars arrive,” he said. “We’re still having a great time, but I think this year there is more anticipation than before, both from our side as a city and also for the people we spoke to, the Cruisers who arrive. As a city, we really try to roll out the red carpet, like everyone along the coast.

“The gossip is really, really booming. The hotels are already full. It’s really going to be a good week.

Bailey noted that two events – the flame throwing event on Tuesday night at Island View Casino in Gulfport and the burnout event at Pass Christian on Thursday – are back on the schedule after being canceled last year due to of COVID-19 issues.

Additionally, Cody said the downtown Ocean Springs entertainment scene has been moved to the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. “I think people will really like the way we presented it,” he said.
